The Steps of a New Home: What Phases Does a House Build Generally Entail?

1. Site Prep and Foundation
Every great home starts with solid ground. Site prep includes clearing the lot, grading for drainage, and preparing a level foundation pad. But how big does the pad need to be? How level? Our How-To Assembly Guide starts you out on the right foot from Phase 1: Site Preparation, which includes sections detailing excavation, pad size/depth, stringing and squaring your home’s footprint, appropriate pad materials, and using a standard builder’s level to determine grade. With our pre-designed kit, don’t have to guess or overbuild; the foundation dimensions come straight from our plans.

2. Framing the Structure
Here’s where your Budget Home Kit really shines. Instead of waiting weeks for lumber delivery or fighting warped boards, your pre-cut, project-specific steel components arrive ready to assemble. Our proprietary framing system connects with driller screws, no welding required. With a couple helpers and basic tools, this stage goes up fast as well as strong, square, and straight every time.
And it’s not just the superstructure framing — our kit includes the pre-punched galvanized steel studs for all your walls (exterior AND interior). Studs slide right into a set steel trac and fasten quickly with a couple of driller screws top-and-bottom—that’s it! And unlike lumber studs, you won’t have to worry about your steel walls warping, twisting, rotting, swelling, or cracking. That means your finished walls will be nice and straight, not wavy and uneven.
3. Exterior and Interior Work
Once the “skeleton” of a home is complete, it’s time for sheathing, roofing, and siding. Traditional wood builds require lots of steps here—plywood, wrap, flashing, siding, shingles, sealing, multiple coats of paint, etc.—but our pre-painted and structurally rigid steel siding and roofing panels are much more of a one-and-done finish. Self-supporting, self-flashing, pre-painted, low maintenance… there’s a reason people are flocking to steel in droves! And while steel framing can accept any standard finishes (wood, stucco, fiber cement, etc.), we also offer upgrades for textured board & batten siding as well, so your home can match your taste and budget no matter what look you’re going for.
Inside your constructed kit, electrical and plumbing rough-ins fit neatly between our straight pre-punched studs, making work faster and cleaner than wood framing. Anything “inside” the walls goes in at this point, including insulation, HVAC, etc. Whatever your specific needs or preferences with any of these systems, you can have the best combination of the flexibility of a custom build with the savings of a kit.
4. Finishes and Fixtures
Your interior finish phases are where you can let your creativity really show: drywall/panel, stonework, flooring, cabinets, paint. Since your framing is dimensionally precise, finishes go up smoothly—less waste, less trimming, and fewer surprises. Granite countertops or laminate? Chandeliers or flush-mount lighting? Lush carpet or stained concrete floors? These choices for finish within your completed kit are simply up to your taste and budget. 5. Final Touches and Furnishings
Before move-in, you’ll do a “punch-out” list—checking every outlet, hinge, and fixture, to make sure all is in order.
